Matomo data import to BigQuery

The Matomo BigQuery Importer offers the possibility to integrate Matomo raw data into Google BigQuery in a simple form on a daily basis. From there, the data can be converted into a desired format and then displayed, for example, in Google Datastudio.

How does the Matomo BigQuery integration work?

The Matomo BigQuery Importer uses the Matomo API, which is output in the Live.getLastVisitsDetails module. This data is stored in JSON format in original schema in BigQuery. The solution is based on a Google Apps script, which can be linked to the BigQuery project.

Data usage in BigQuery

The possibilities for further use of the data in BigQuery are many. Here are some use cases that we implement on a daily basis.

  • Matomo data in Google Datastudio
  • Google Ads Conversion Import
  • Microsoft Ads Conversion Import

Datastudio Dashboard “Matomo Ecommerce

A Datastudio dashboard, with the most important standard reports for Ecommerce websites.

Of course, it is easy to extract data from the BigQuery Importer data at hand, so that Google Ads conversions can be conveniently passed from Matomo to Google Ads. The transmitted data is “smart bidding” capable, so conversion based optimization methods continue to work. For this feature, there is also a standalone Google Ads Conversion Import Script for Matomo.

Microsoft Ads Conversion Import

Microsoft Ads also offers conversion import, similar to Google Ads. In this way, conversions that were generated via Bing and recorded in Matomo can also be transferred to Microsoft Ads. The transmitted data is “smart bidding” capable, so conversion based optimization methods continue to work.
